How to use Chariot

  • Q. How does it work?

    A. Watch our video for a brief introduction https://youtu.be/bLE8pU47K90

  • Q. As a passenger, how will I know how much my ride will cost?

    A. This pre-determined fare is shown in the app for both passenger and driver to agree upon, and the app uses a cashless payment method by charging your credit card so that you will never be asked for cash as you travel.

  • Q. As a driver, how much will I receive for giving a ride?

    A. Fares are calculated using the distance (on Google Maps), the mileage rate and the zone, with drivers receiving, and the total cost of the ride is equally shared between passenger and driver (maximum occupancy is 3x Passenger, 1x Driver), with each passenger paying only his or her share. The total payment a driver receives is multiplied by the numbers of passenger sharing the ride. The driver receives a weekly payment made by Chariot based on their previous weeks ride history.

  • Q. How are ride fares calculated?

    A. Fares are calculated using the distance of the ride (via Google Maps) and the mileage rate applicable to the driver’s vehicle (via AA records). This pre-determined fare is shown in the app for both passenger and driver to agree upon.

  • Q. Where can I get a ride to?

    A. Currently, we’re just launching in the Wellington and Palmerston North regions.

The following kinds of rides are facilitated by Chariot:

    • Intercity / long-haul trips (i.e. Palmerston North to Wellington)
    • Commuting (i.e. recurring trips to works, uni or school)
    • Inner city / short-haul, one-off trips (i.e. from/to event, shopping, a night out)
  • Q. Why become a driver?

    A. Chariot drivers save on their cost of travel, often in an otherwise empty car, with contributions going towards fuel, vehicle maintenance or wear and tear.

  • Q. Isn’t this just like Uber or another taxi service?

    A. Where Uber drivers are signing up to make a profit, our drivers are just looking to share a ride, and share the costs. They’re regular Kiwis, like you, who want to fill their empty seats and get reimbursed for the costs of driving — from fuel, to maintenance and wear and tear.

Our drivers are everyday people (who have been verified), who are already driving in the same direction passengers are heading in. Chariot operates under a genuine cost-sharing agreement which means the cost of travel is split between the passenger and drivers, with a small service fee included in the passenger fare.

  • Q. Don’t drivers need a ’P’ endorsement’ under the “Land Transport Rule – Operator Licensing” if passengers are transported for hire or reward?

    A. Our model works within a genuine cost-sharing agreement, which means our drivers are exempt from special rules and regulations — all you need is a full driver’s licence. And of course, passing an ID verification check as part of our safety assurance.

  • Q. How are passengers matched to drivers?

    A. Drivers and Passengers will be primarily matched based on their origin, destination and tim Our waypoint matching algorithm will also help to match passengers with drivers along a portion of the driver’s intended route, for example Auckland to Wellington will also match with Hamilton to Palmerston North.

Note: this algorithm will match a ride that has 80% of its polyline points that fall within the driver’s route.

  • Q. Why was I charged $1 on my credit card?

    A. The $1 charge that you will see on your statement is an authorisation amount that is held by our merchant facilitator to ensure that your credit card is currently active. This allows us to then create a billing token for your account. This means that we do not store your credit card details anywhere, but are still able to securely initiate a transaction. The $1 amount will be automatically refunded, however please note that different banks take varying amounts of time to enact the refund. We have found that it may be anywhere between 1-7 days.

Payment

  • Q. How is the fare calculated?

    A. Fares are calculated using the distance of the ride (via Google Maps) and the mileage rate applicable to the driver’s vehicle (via AA records). This pre-determined fare is shown in the app for both passenger and driver to agree upon.

The total cost of the ride is equally shared between passenger and driver (maximum occupancy is 3x Passenger, 1x Driver), with each passenger paying only his or her share. The total payment a driver receives is multiplied by the numbers of passenger sharing the ride.

  • Q. Why is the driver included as a paying occupant?

    A. Since it’s a cost-sharing model the driver’s own share needs to be considered in the pricing and split of the costs as well.

Vehicles

  • Q. What is the maximum number of passengers in one car?

    A. For safety reasons the maximum number of passengers is currently limited to three passengers. Vehicles with seating for up to 7 people or family vans have been currently limited to three passengers as well. We will look at expanding this rule on a later stage, depending on market needs.

Safety

  • Q. How is this safe?

    A. We’ve worked hard on ensuring you’re safe to ride with Chariot by putting a comprehensive safety system in place. Our users are ID verified, and our review system helps create trust within the Chariot community. We also provide 24/7 support.

  • Q. I would use this, but being a young woman I’m a little hesitant to get into a strangers car. How do I know it’s safe?

    A. To make things less scary for you we have a female-only option where you can choose to ride with only female drivers. Our ratings and review system allows you to decide which members you deem trustworthy so they’ll hardly seem like strangers in the car.
